Plot Summary: This film is Tian Zhuangzhuang's tribute to the 1948 film of the same name directed by Fei Mu. Compared to the Fei version, the color palette has been changed to color, the spatial extension is much greater, the female protagonist's monologue is omitted, and the story content and narrative techniques have also been modified to be more accessible to today's audiences.
The film opens with a poignant portrayal of the superficial yet emotionally distant relationship between young Zhou Yuwen (Hu Jingfan) and her husband Dai Liyan (Wu Jun). Yuwen's devotion to Liyan remains confined to traditional moral obligations, while her former friend and ex-lover Zhang Zhichen (Xin Baiqing) arrives from Shanghai in a hurry. Though his visit stirs Yuwen's conflicting emotions and sparks her desire to leave the small town, the abrupt end of their monologues leaves her longing unfulfilled. Meanwhile, Dai Xiu (Lu Sisi), surrounded by a vibrant circle of like-minded friends, finds both Zhichen's emotional impact and her own feelings for him less profound...
